Georgetown Art Attack
Assaults Seattle’s Senses on March 12th!

The fabulous Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack returns on March 12. The neighborhood lights up from 6:00 to 9:00 PM with visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic industrial arts corridor. This monthly event affords the public an opportunity to visit working artists’ studios and patronize the lively and diverse establishments that surround them.

Among the highlights of the March 12 Art Attack:
The amazing Georgetown Trailer Park Mall celebrates Americana at its best with the debut of Charlie's Buns ‘N' Stuff, a trunk show of Frida Kustoms in the Frida Trailer Gallery, and live recording for the Georgetown Trailer Park Podcast; Krab Jab Studio presents "The Alien-Pooka War" by artist Milo Duke; the grand opening of Vecta Photo, a photography studio and gallery in the Original Rainier Brewery, features photographs of Seattle Slam wheelchair rugby athletes (proceeds of sales will benefit the team); "Chalk:” new art by Mark LaFalce at Mark LaFalce Painting Works; the neighboring Seattle Sculpture Atelier features a preview of Spring classes; Calamity Jane’s hosts an assemblage and sculpture group show with Yvette Endrijautzki, Morbid Anatomy, Matthew C. Scott, Jack Howe and Brandon Bowman; Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery mounts an exhibition focusing on master French cartoonist Jacques Tardi with a slide talk by curator, editor and Tardi translator Kim Thompson; and the many wonderfully creative shopping and dining experiences that make historic Georgetown a priceless civic asset worthy of preservation.

Wow, last night was really something special. Georgetown Art Attack was excellent: All City Coffee, The Mix, The Stables and others. There was lots of space for art promoted by businesses in the neighborhood. Forget the coffee and hot chocolate, the 9lb Hammer Bar was the center of the volcano - on fire.  There was a constant flow of people, art, colors, smells and sights, always with the distinctive flavor of Georgetown. Classy, trendy, punk and retro with "innovative" fashion that was much appreciated. The intention was to have a good time, welcome friends, to appreciate the talent of the participants and drink well. Last night was the celebration of the Art Jam 5, which consists of setting up a scenario/theme, (this time at the 9lb Hammer) provide space and materials and set the visual artists free to create original pieces right then and there. It was very interesting to see how each of the participants developed their ideas under the inescapable influence of the music, alcohol and supportive, enthusiastic friends cheering the artists along. The event lasted until about 2 am. The rain never stopped, people who remained to support the intuitive creative process added an edge which did not seem to diminish the high quality of the paintings. The art created in those few hours was sold immediately to the art hungry appreciators in the audience.

Art Jam 5 - five years of celebrating the creative process in Georgetown; a rare and unique event in this city. The night was very productive for us. Oscar and I struck up close ties with our neighbors and fellow art critics/patrons to open a whole world of possibilities about our project: Fonda la Catrina. Our soon to open space we’ve been pouring our efforts into has attracted many creative, engaged, progressive people who are interested in collaborating some way to ensure that our ideas come true.
Soon we will be rewarded by our efforts to project the image and identity of our culture: who we are and what we can offer our adopted community.
Fonda la Catrina will open in 2011, contributing to the fire that dominates this part of the city and generates so much creativity and life, fused with originality, the avant-garde and tenacity that has always characterizes entrepreneurs with dreams. It is a quality that Georgetown has inspired and incubated for many years. Fonda la Catrina will add our flavor to this fine mix; as distinctive and contemporary as the Mexico we love so much and want to promote.

Congratulations to all Art Jam 5 participants. Thanks for sharing your art, your vision and motivating so many people to act on their craft and collaborating together. Thank you 9lb Hammer, thanks to the organizers of Art Jam 5 and Art Attack. See you soon.
